The Depot Rail Trail begins at South Spencer Road and heads north through a mix of woods, wetlands, and residential edges before ending near Chestnut Street in the town of Spencer. This easy, level route follows the old Boston & Albany Railroad corridor, originally constructed in the late 1800s. Along the way, hikers pass several scenic spots, including marshlands near the Cranberry River, forested stretches, and remnants of the trail’s railroading past—such as whistle posts and stonework.
A short spur early on provides access to Spencer State Forest, offering an optional detour or place to explore. The trail surface is unpaved but generally well-graded; however, expect some erosion or muddy patches after heavy rain. With year-round access and easy terrain, this trail offers a quiet, gentle walk through varied habitats with occasional historical points of interest.
