The Buffumville Lake Loop begins and ends near the main recreation area in Buffumville Lake Park, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This moderate route follows blue blazes through mixed forest and along the shoreline, crossing several small inlets. Hikers begin by heading north from the main trailhead, following a circuit that stays close to the water’s edge and offers consistent lake views, birding opportunities, and a peaceful woodland setting. Some sections may become muddy or overgrown depending on the season.
The trail passes near several park features including picnic areas, a disc golf course, and a designated swimming beach, though the hiking route stays relatively quiet once away from the main park zone. Near the lake’s southern end—about halfway through the route—a small island is available for primitive camping by reservation only, with access by boat. As the trail circles around the southern shoreline, it returns to the boat launch parking area just south of where the route began. Use caution when crossing Oxford Road, especially during high-traffic times. While park facilities operate seasonally, the trail remains open year-round. Hunting is permitted outside developed areas, and leashed dogs are allowed. This is a scenic and approachable hiking option for those seeking lake hikes in central Massachusetts with minimal elevation change.
