Loop
Begin this moderate hiking route at the Hogback Mountain Conservation Area Trailhead off Route 9 in Wilmington, VT. The trail climbs gently through a mix of hardwood forest and old ski area clearings, eventually joining a ridgeline trail toward Mt. Olga. Just below the top, a short out-and-back spur leads to the fire tower atop Mt. Olga, offering panoramic views of the southern Green Mountains and beyond. After visiting the summit, return to the main route and descend down a short trail to complete the loop through the forested slopes of the former ski hill.
This route is best hiked from late spring through peak foliage season. Expect gentle to moderate grades with a few steeper sections near the summit. There are no reliable water sources on the trail, and cell reception is limited throughout the area. The fire tower and broad views from Mt. Olga provide a rewarding high point to this accessible, scenic route through southern Vermont’s backcountry.
