There and Back
This route begins at the Deerfield Ridge Trailhead and follows a single path to the summit of Haystack Mountain. The trail climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest, with moderate terrain and occasional rocky footing. About midway up, the trail passes seasonal streams that may be dry in late summer. As you ascend, the trail narrows and steepens, winding through spruce stands. From here, a brief final push leads to the open summit, where wide-ranging views stretching from Mount Snow toward Harriman Reservoir.
This is a well-traveled route in the Green Mountain National Forest, popular for its fall colors and proximity to Wilmington. Conditions can be muddy or icy in spring and fall; microspikes are recommended during these times. Return to the trailhead along the same route.
