The John B. Austin Nature Trail begins from a small trailhead on Slayton Settlement Road and explores a modest preserve managed by the Town of Lockport. This short, easy route forms a series of connecting loops on natural surface paths that wind through 100 acres of hardwood forest. Visitors can follow gravel and dirt trails through gently rolling terrain, with several benches placed along the way. One spur leads to a seasonal waterfall known as Toenniessen Falls, located along an unnamed tributary of Eighteenmile Creek. The flow is often strongest in spring and after rainfall, and may dry up in summer. Highlights include two massive oak trees believed to be over 250 years old, along with abundant wildflowers, mushrooms, and sightings of owls, frogs, deer, and other local wildlife. Trails can become muddy near the stream, and poison ivy is common along the edges. Open from sunrise to sunset year-round, this route offers a peaceful nature walk close to town with a rewarding mix of scenery and solitude.
