The Bird Trail begins near the southern entrance of Joseph Davis State Park off Lower River Road and winds through a mix of wetlands, meadows, and light forest. The trail follows a flat, well-maintained path suitable for casual hikers and families, with options to continue on connecting routes for a longer walk. Along the way, interpretive signs highlight the area’s ecology, and short spurs lead to overlooks above the Niagara River.
This trail is a favorite among birders, with more than 100 species observed in the park each year, including migratory waterfowl, songbirds, and occasional bald eagles. Open year-round, the route is especially rewarding in spring and fall when migration peaks. Expect muddy conditions in early spring, carry all drinking water, and watch for ticks in grassy areas. The combination of easy walking and excellent wildlife viewing makes this one of the best short day hikes in western New York.
