There and Back
The Artpark Gorge Trail begins near the Upper Level Parking Lot in Artpark State Park in Lewiston, NY. From the trailhead, the route descends stone steps into the Niagara River Gorge, offering sweeping views of layered rock walls and the swirling river below. At the bottom, the path follows the riverbank through rocky terrain with occasional benches and interpretive signs. Hikers pass fossil-rich outcrops and may catch glimpses of Canada across the water. The route ends near the river’s edge by the whirlpool area before returning the same way.
Though the trail is relatively short, it includes uneven footing and a moderate climb back up to the rim. The terrain can be slick after rain and icy in winter, so spring through fall is the best season for a visit. Dogs are allowed on leash, but there are no water sources or facilities beyond the trailhead. This hike offers one of the most scenic and accessible ways to experience the Niagara River Gorge without the crowds found elsewhere.
