This moderate hiking route begins at the main parking area in Fillmore Glen State Park, just off Route 38. From the lot, follow signs for the North Rim Trail, which starts climbing almost immediately via a series of stone steps. The trail winds through mixed hardwood forest, climbing above Glen Creek with intermittent views down into the narrow gorge. Cowsheds Falls, the largest waterfall in the park, can be seen shortly after beginning the ascent. Around the upper portion of the rim, the route narrows and runs close to the edge, offering elevated views of the gorge below.
At the far end of the park, cross a footbridge over the creek to join the South Rim Trail. From here, the route returns toward the trailhead on the opposite side of the gorge. Expect more stone stairs, several viewpoints through the trees, and occasional muddy sections, especially after rain. The descent is steady, with fewer steep sections than the North Rim. The full route offers a good mix of elevation change, scenic waterfalls, and classic Finger Lakes forest. Fall is an especially rewarding time to hike here, with vibrant foliage and lower crowds.
