The Bear Swamp Blue Trail begins on Bear Swamp Road near Spafford, NY, and forms a moderate loop through the rolling terrain of the Finger Lakes highlands. Heading clockwise from the trailhead, the route climbs gently into mature hardwood forest, weaving between seasonal streambeds and low ridgelines. After a short distance, stay right at the first Y-intersection to remain on the Blue Trail and continue through a mix of maple, oak, and beech woods that provide ample canopy cover.
As the route curves south and west, it skirts the edges of several wetland areas—prime spots for spotting warblers, raptors, and other forest birds. The trail remains well-defined, though muddy patches and slippery roots are common after rain. Occasional side trails link to other routes in the Bear Swamp network, but the Blue Trail remains distinct with its consistent blaze. After passing through a denser thicket of young growth, the path loops north and east to rejoin the initial approach.
Best suited for spring through fall day hikes in Central New York, this trail offers quiet forest walking with rewarding wildlife sightings and peaceful wetland views.
