The Bear Swamp Red Trail begins from the Hartnett Road trailhead and forms a loop through the New York State Forest. The route follows a wide path beneath a canopy of hemlock and mixed hardwoods, with sections of uneven footing and occasional muddy stretches. Early in the hike, the trail passes near wetlands that provide habitat for songbirds and waterfowl before turning deeper into the forest. From higher ground, hikers catch occasional glimpses into the Bear Swamp Creek valley before the route bends back toward the starting point.
This moderate hike is open year-round, with the best conditions in late spring through fall. In winter, it offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Water sources are limited to small streams and seeps, which may dry up in summer, so plan to bring sufficient water or a filter. With limited signage and low visitor use, a map or GPS is recommended. The trail rewards hikers with quiet woods, bird activity, and a sense of solitude.
