Loop
This easy to moderate loop passes through conservation lands managed by the Crocker Conservation Area. From the parking area on Flat Rock Road, begin by walking a short distance north along the road, then turn left onto Overlook Trail. The trail enters mixed forest and quickly reaches granite ledges, where glacially smoothed rock and occasional viewpoints offer glimpses of Overlook Reservoir below. After a short climb, continue along the ridgeline and follow signs to cross the dam at the reservoir’s southern end. From there, the route returns north along the Water Department access road, gradually descending through forest back to the trailhead.
Additional trails in the conservation area as well as the neighboring Mass Audubon Flat Rock Wildlife Sanctuary offer ways to extend the route. Surfaces can be uneven or slippery, especially in wet or icy conditions. While dogs and bikes are permitted within the conservation area, please note these uses are prohibited within the wildlife sanctuary boundary. Wildlife sightings are possible throughout, with local habitat supporting deer, fox, and occasional bobcat or bear activity. This is a flexible outing for walkers and hikers seeking a peaceful, scenic experience near Fitchburg.
