This easy route begins at the parking area on the east side of Union Street, within Lincoln Woods Wildlife Sanctuary in Leominster, MA. Start on the Elizabeth Lincoln Loop, which winds gently through mature hardwood and pine forest. At the Y-intersection, bear left, then continue onto the Vernal Pool Loop to head deeper into the sanctuary. Here, the trail circles seasonal wetlands that serve as breeding grounds for amphibians like wood frogs and spotted salamanders—especially active during spring migration events known as “Big Night.” After rejoining the Elizabeth Lincoln Loop, stay left to return to the parking area.
Open year-round, this short route with minimal elevation change is best explored in spring when vernal pools are active, though sections may be wet or muddy after rain. Snowshoeing is possible in winter. No dogs are allowed. This peaceful route is a good option for birding, nature walks, and short day hikes in Central Massachusetts.
