Loop
The Farandnear Loop begins at the main parking area on Center Road in Shirley, MA, within the Farandnear Reservation managed by The Trustees of Reservations. This easy route combines the Blue and Yellow Loops to form a pleasant circuit through varied terrain. From the trailhead, follow the Blue Loop through gently wooded areas and rolling lawns. Early in the hike, you’ll pass near an arboretum featuring nearly 80 conifer species—an educational highlight of the property. Stay left at early junctions and after a short distance, turn left onto Bog Road to cross Spruce Swamp Brook and connect with the Yellow Loop.
Turn left on the Yellow Loop, following it past the old reservoir through mixed hardwoods and a quiet hemlock grove. The route winds by remnants of former cranberry bogs and garden areas, maintaining a relaxed pace with low elevation gain throughout. Return via Bog Road, then turn left on the Blue Loop to return to the parking area. Dogs are allowed on leash, but bicycles and horseback riding are not permitted. The reservation is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, with seasonal bathroom access. Hikers have the option of creating shorter routes via the inner connecting trails. This is a peaceful, well-maintained option for day hikes in Central Massachusetts woodlands.
