Starting from the sanctuary parking lot off Cardinal Lane in Groton, this easy route follows a series of well-marked trails through varied terrain in Rocky Hill Wildlife Sanctuary. Begin on the Mourning Cloak Trail, heading west along the edge of a wetland and past a beaver pond known for strong birding—especially during nesting season when herons gather near the water. A short distance in, stay right at the first junction to continue on the Heron Trail through rocky outcrops and low-lying wet areas.
At the next marked intersection, turn right onto the Ovenbird Trail as it climbs gently through mixed hardwood forest. Keep right again at a Y-intersection to connect with the Chestnut Oak Trail, which loops around higher ground with drier, sandy soils and a healthy stand of chestnut oaks. The trail descends gradually before reconnecting with the Ovenbird Trail. Turn right on the Heron Trail, passing wetland edges and a short spur leading to views across Lower Long Pond. A short distance later, turn right on the Rocky Hill Trail, reconnect with Mourning Cloak Trail, and follow it back to the parking area. Dogs, horses, and other pets are not allowed on Mass Audubon property. This year-round sanctuary offers a peaceful walk through wetlands, granite ledges, and upland forest—an excellent option for easy hiking near Groton with strong birding opportunities.
