This easy route begins at the parking area and kiosk just off Still River Depot Road near the canoe launch within Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. From the trailhead, head north on the Riverside Trail as it winds through floodplain forest along the Nashua River and overlooking wetland habitat, offering good opportunities for wildlife viewing. Continue on the main path as it curves west, then north before transitioning into the Turnpike Trail. This section follows the historic route of the early 19th-century Union Turnpike through wooded stretches and marsh edges.
At the intersection with the Tank Road Trail, turn right to head south and return to the trailhead. Terrain throughout is mostly flat and easy to follow, though sections may become muddy, overgrown, or flooded depending on the season and recent rainfall. Dogs and horses are not allowed, and mosquitoes, ticks, and poison ivy are common during late spring and summer. This short route offers a peaceful way to experience the refuge’s wetlands, forest, and Nashua River corridor.
