The Flat Rock Trail begins at the main trailhead on Burbank Street within Mass Audubon’s Flat Rock Wildlife Sanctuary in Fitchburg, MA. From the parking area, follow the Main Path north through mixed hardwood forest and past a swamp on the right. The route climbs gently over rocky terrain and into shaded stands of hemlock before reaching the northern edge of the sanctuary, where a signed historic house site appears on the left.
To return, retrace the Main Path and take a right onto Pigpen Path to descend along Hemlock Hill before rejoining the trailhead. Birding is popular in this area and larger wildlife sightings are possible in fall and winter. Trail markers may be sparse at junctions, so carrying a map or GPS is recommended. Dogs and bikes are allowed in neighboring conservation lands but not allowed within the wildlife sanctuary boundaries. This moderate hike offers year-round access and can be extended using connecting trails within the sanctuary or adjoining conservation lands, making it a versatile option for day hikes near Fitchburg.
