This route begins at the parking area at the end of Raymond Street in Gardner, Massachusetts, and forms a circuit around the Lake Wampanoag Wildlife Sanctuary. From the trailhead, head south on Meadow Loop, gradually transitioning into open meadows and ecologically managed grasslands. The trail passes through several habitat types, including a wetland area and a small pond, with chances to spot tree swallows, bobolinks, and Savannah sparrows. Footing is generally easy, though hikers should expect occasional slopes, wet patches, and uneven ground—especially after rain or spring thaw.
Continue onto Moosewood Trail through a forest of spruce, fir, and beech. Turn right onto the optional Woodland Loop Trail or continue straight to return to the trailhead. This peaceful, low-traffic route is ideal for short nature walks or casual day hikes in central Massachusetts. The trail is open year-round from dawn to dusk and dogs are not allowed. In warmer months, expect ticks and mosquitoes. This is a rewarding route for quiet woodland walking and wildlife viewing.
