Point to Point
The trail network at Susan N. McLane Audubon Center and Silk Farm Wildlife Sanctuary begins near the McLane Center visitor area on Silk Farm Road, where signed paths head out into mixed forest and open grassland. From the kiosk, follow the main footpath as it gently climbs through pine and hardwood forest before splitting at several well-marked junctions. Short connectors lead toward open fields and old orchard remnants, while longer options continue farther into the sanctuary toward Great Turkey Pond. Junctions are frequent and clearly signed, making it easy to tailor the route length by combining loops and spurs.
As the route progresses, the terrain alternates between shaded woods, managed grassland, and wetland edges that support strong bird habitat throughout the year. One branch descends gradually toward the pond shoreline, where the path follows the water through mixed forest and offers quiet viewpoints suitable for wildlife observation. Other routes circle fields used by grassland birds and pass vernal pools that are active in spring. Trails are generally smooth and well maintained, with only minor roots and uneven footing. The overall experience highlights easy navigation, seasonal wildlife viewing, and peaceful walking close to town, with the pond and meadow scenery providing the main reward at the far end of the sanctuary.
