The Lehtinen Park and Jim Hill Riverwalk Trails form a flat, easy-to-navigate route along the Contoocook River in Penacook, just northwest of downtown Concord. Begin from either the Runnells Road trailhead near the kiosk or from the small lot off Horse Hill Road near the Lehtinen monument. From either access point, follow wide paths through floodplain forest, with occasional junctions leading to river overlooks, picnic areas, and quiet spots like Daisy Beach. A spur path connects to a scenic cove with summer river access. The trail network follows sections of an old railroad grade, offering a mix of packed dirt, grass, and lightly wooded terrain.
This route is well-suited for walking, snowshoeing in winter, and birding year-round. Keep an eye out for deer, beavers, and a wide variety of bird species that frequent the riparian corridor. While generally dry in summer and fall, spring runoff can flood low-lying areas near the river—wear appropriate footwear and check seasonal conditions before heading out. Whether you’re looking for a casual walk, a short local hike, or a peaceful wildlife-watching outing, this trail system delivers easy access to nature with scenic riverside views.
