Loop
The High Falls Conservation Area Loop begins at the main trailhead on Roxbury Road in Philmont, NY, and forms a short, easy route through forested terrain managed by the Columbia Land Conservancy. From the parking area, the trail enters a mix of deciduous and evergreen forest, following well-marked paths with minimal elevation change. After a short distance, hikers reach a signed junction—stay right to head clockwise toward High Falls. The route winds through a hemlock grove and crosses a small footbridge over High Falls Brook before arriving at the waterfall overlook. Caution is advised near the edge, where rocks may be slick, especially after rain or snow.
Beyond the falls, the trail continues through mixed hardwood forest with occasional wildlife sightings and interpretive signage highlighting local ecology. The route passes a small pond before closing the loop near the initial junction. While the trail is open year-round, hikers should be prepared for icy or muddy sections during winter and spring. This short, family-friendly route offers a quiet forest experience capped by views of one of Columbia County’s tallest waterfalls.
