There and Back
This route begins from the Bolton Valley Ski Resort, following the Long Trail northbound as it climbs steadily through northern hardwood forest. The trail passes through mixed terrain with several rocky, root-covered sections and a few short, steep pitches. Within a short distance from the base, the route crosses backcountry ski paths—keep an eye out for skiers in winter or spring. The Long Trail remains well-marked but can be slick in wet conditions and tricky to follow during low-visibility weather.
After a sustained climb, the trail levels out briefly near the high ridge before making a final push to the wooded summit of Bolton Mountain. Those wishing to overnight can continue a short ways north to Puffer Lodge. Return by retracing your steps south along the Long Trail. Expect a moderately strenuous effort due to the elevation gain and rugged footing, and come prepared with water and tick protection in the warmer months. The summit’s quiet forest setting and distant mountain views make this a rewarding day hike in the Green Mountains.
