Loop
Begin this moderate to difficult route from the main base lodge parking lot at Bolton Valley Ski Area. Follow signs for the Beaver Pond Trail, climbing steadily through northern hardwoods toward the scenic pond that gives the trail its name. Look for moose tracks and beaver activity along the shoreline before continuing uphill to meet the Long Trail. Turn right (northbound) on the Long Trail, gaining a rocky ridgeline with wide views across the Green Mountains. Expect steep, uneven terrain and possible mud, especially after rain.
Stay on the Long Trail as it winds through spruce-fir forest, then look for the Goat Path branching right—a quieter, steeper descent that leads back toward the ski area. This final section can be slippery, particularly in wet or icy conditions, so tread carefully. The route returns to the base lodge, completing a satisfying circuit through varied terrain with wildlife, views, and backcountry solitude.
