Description
The Upper Layout Creek Trail follows a canyon draw on the east side of the Pryor Mountains to a magnificent year-round spring. The drawas steep cliffs make the perfect frame for your southeastern view of the Bighorn Canyon and the Bighorn Mountains. Down the gravel road from the Ewing-Snell Ranch, find limited trailhead parking. The trail itself climbs steeply up dry rocky slopes with small stream crossings and waterfalls along the way. Some of the creekas man-made irrigation system can be seen not far from the trailhead, a reminder of how important water was, and still is, to thrive in the harsh climate. The vegetation becomes strikingly lush and vibrant as the draw narrows to Layout Creek Springs. Water falls down the rock face of the canyon in spectacular fashion, creating the feel of a hidden oasis. Water from the spring also creates a unique riparian environment rich with biodiversity. Protect this space for future visitors and generations by staying on the trail and not climbing on the spring or surrounding vegetation.
