Description
The Lower Layout Creek Trail begins near the Ewing-Snell Ranch Historic Site and heads east toward the edge of Bighorn Canyon. From the trailhead, follow the well-defined singletrack as it climbs gently through desert scrub and scattered junipers. Stay left at the Y-intersection shortly after the start and continue toward the canyon rim. The trail follows the base of a ridgeline, crossing a few dry creekbeds where footing may be loose. While the elevation gain is moderate, sections of uneven rock and exposed terrain require steady footing. As the route approaches its end, it narrows before reaching a natural overlook with sweeping views of Bighorn Canyon and the Pryor Mountains. Wildlife sightings, including wild horses and Bighorn sheep, are possible along the way. Return along the same path to the trailhead. This is one of the best short hikes in the Bighorn Canyon area for expansive views with relatively low effort.
