Point to Point
The State Line Trail begins near the Montana-Wyoming border, most commonly accessed from Trail Creek Road or Dryhead Road trailheads. Following the ridgeline that marks the state boundary, this remote point-to-point route traverses rocky high desert terrain managed by Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area and adjacent BLM lands. The trail climbs steadily from the foothills into exposed ridgelines, with several steep and rocky sections that may require careful footing or light scrambling. At various points along the route, hikers gain expansive views of Bighorn Canyon, the red cliffs below, and the distant Pryor Mountains.
Expect dry, sun-exposed stretches in midsummer. Wildlife sightings may include wild horses, mule deer, or even the occasional black bear. This is a rugged and scenic day hike ideal for hikers looking to explore remote canyon country with big views and few crowds.
