There and Back
The Hillsboro Trail begins at the Hillsboro Trailhead near Barry’s Landing in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. From the trailhead, the route follows a mostly flat path across open high desert terrain, gradually leading hikers toward the old Hillsboro Ranch site. Along the way, the trail offers expansive views across Bighorn Canyon and the surrounding cliffs, with scattered juniper and sagebrush lining the path.
Stay on the main trail throughout—there are no major junctions to navigate. Watch for signs of wildlife, including bighorn sheep or wild horses, particularly in the early morning or evening hours. Near the turnaround point, remnants of the historic Hillsboro Ranch offer a glimpse into the area’s homesteading past.
This is a dry, exposed route with no shade or reliable water sources, so carry plenty of water and wear sun protection. Rattlesnakes are occasionally spotted in warmer months. The trail is best hiked from late spring through fall, when conditions are typically dry and mild. This easy route is ideal for those looking for a scenic, low-commitment day hike in Bighorn Canyon.
