Loop
The Kinderhook Creek Nature Preserve Loop begins and ends at the parking area on Martha Hicks Road in East Nassau. This moderate route explores the outer perimeter of the preserve, starting along wide wooded paths and quickly entering mixed forest with hemlock stands and ridge-top oak groves. Follow posted markers and junction signs carefully—numerous intersecting trails can make navigation tricky without a map or GPS. Around a short distance in, the trail drops toward Kinderhook Creek, offering direct access to the shoreline and nearby picnic spots. From there, continue along the creek briefly before climbing a steeper wooded slope—some routes include a rope-assisted segment. At the upper end of the loop, the trail traverses stone walls and forested uplands before descending back toward the trailhead.
Expect short, sometimes steep climbs and a variety of terrain, with creekside views, dense woods, and open ridge sections. This route is especially rewarding for hikers looking for a scenic walk through classic upstate New York forest with opportunities for nature viewing and fishing.
