Loop
The Hand Hollow Conservation Area Loop begins at a small trailhead off Gale Hill Road in East Chatham and explores a mix of hardwood forest, meadows, and wetlands within this publicly accessible Columbia Land Conservancy property. The route follows well-marked, gently rolling trails that form a natural loop, making it easy to follow in either direction. Multiple short connectors and intersections allow for variations in distance, and interpretive signs highlight ecological features along the way.
Early in the hike, you'll pass through a wooded section before reaching a series of small ponds and open wetland views. Watch for birds and other wildlife near the water, especially in the morning and evening. The trail remains low and mellow throughout, making it suitable for beginner hikers, families, or those seeking a quiet, low-effort outing. Snowshoeing is possible in winter, but conditions can be muddy during spring and fall. This is one of the more accessible day hikes near the Berkshires foothills and a great choice for casual hiking or nature observation.
