Point to Point
This route begins and ends at the day-use parking area inside Cherry Plain State Park, located in eastern New York’s Taconic Highlands. From the trailhead, follow signed park trails through dense mixed hardwood forest, passing several junctions—continue straight or bear left at most forks to stay on the main loop. Early in the route, a short side trail offers access to Black River Pond, a calm waterbody with limited shoreline views and birdwatching potential. As the trail curves around the southern section of the park, hikers pass through wetland habitat marked by beaver activity and small stream crossings.
Multiple spur trails branch off the main loop, providing options to shorten the route or extend it toward other areas of the park. Elevation gain is minimal, and the trail’s gentle terrain makes it a solid choice for families, newer hikers, or anyone looking for a peaceful walk in the woods. Sections of the route may be muddy in spring or after rain, and ticks are common in warm months. In winter, the loop is accessible to cross-country skiers and snowshoers, though the park road may be closed to vehicles. The forested landscape, pond access, and light foot traffic make this one of the more relaxing day hikes in eastern New York.
