Loop
Starting from the main trailhead at the Poestenkill Community Forest parking area, this outer loop follows a combination of ridge trails, old forest roads, and woodland connectors through a 350-acre forest on the Rensselaer Plateau. Begin on the Saphouse Trail and follow it to Moose, then Hemlock Hollow, which transitions into mixed hardwoods and potential wetland zones. Continue onto Barred Owl and Porcupine Ridge for a gradual climb along forested ridgelines with intermittent views. At the far end of the loop, connect via Truancy to reach Gravel Ridge Road, a wider trail that leads to Down Payment and returns to the trailhead.
This moderate loop offers a good balance of elevation change and varied terrain without committing to steep or sustained climbs. Sections can be wet or muddy, especially near low-lying areas like Big Beaver Bog. For a shorter outing, use Gravel Ridge Road to cut across early or skip Porcupine Ridge and Truancy entirely. For a longer hike, additional trail spurs within the network offer more mileage. Forested ridges, old stone walls, and seasonal wetlands make this one of the more rewarding day hikes in eastern New York’s Capital Region.
