Snow Hole + Taconic Crest Trail

The trail to the Snow Hole is part of the Taconic Crest Trail. This section of the trail goes through the Hopkins Memorial Forest, which is run by the Center for Environmental Studies primarily for research and educational opportunities. The trail begins across from the Petersburg Pass parking lot. The trailhead from this parking lot is hard to see. The first section of the trail is very steep and leads to a board with maps and the registration box. Just past the registration box is a path to the first viewpoint, where a small wooden bench looks out over the valleys. The trail continues to climb but stays just below the ridgeline. The trail can get muddy during the spring season but dries up in the summer when more crowds arrive. The trail is very easy to follow; markers in the shape of blue squares with a white diamond lead the way. The path has a few points of moderate incline as it moves along the ridgeline through a young forest. The Snow Hole is a crevice in the ground with a small cave at the end. It is said that there is snow at the bottom year round. Climb to the bottom of the rift in the ground for views of the interesting rock formations and the Snow Hole.
