There and Back
The Dome Trail begins on the east side of White Oaks Road near Pownal, and climbs steadily through the Green Mountain National Forest. The route follows a narrow, sometimes overgrown path through mixed hardwood forest, gaining elevation via moderate switchbacks and steeper, rockier sections near the top. After a short distance, hikers pass through a transitional forest zone rich in birdlife before the trail ends below the summit.
Stay on the main tread through all junctions. The trail becomes more uneven as it ascends, with roots and slick rock posing a challenge during or after rainfall. While the summit is forested, breaks in the canopy offer some views of southwestern Vermont and the Taconic Range. This is the turnaround point for the route.
There are no reliable water sources along the way, so bring adequate water and be prepared for ticks and mosquitoes in warmer months. This quiet trail offers a peaceful experience for hikers seeking solitude, forest scenery, and sweeping mountain views without the crowds.
