Description
The Pine Cobble Trail is a lightly-trafficked, moderate trail in Williamstown, Massachusetts, that joins up with the Appalachian Trail at the summit. The trail is 3.2 miles round trip and can be combined with the Class of '98 Trail for a loop. The summit provides 360-degree views from many different vantage points, including a view great view of North Adams, Mount Greylock, and Williamstown. The trail can be completed in about two hours, and the summit is a perfect spot for a picnic. The Pine Cobble Trail is a steady climb with one small section that is relatively flat. It ascends through a beautiful oak forest, which contains five kinds of oak: red, white, black, scarlet, and chestnut. In spring you will find lots of wildflowers as well as prolific mountain laurels, which bloom in early June. For the most part the trail is straight, passing one unmarked right turn and a left marked turn to the Class of a98 Trail. After a steep climb, you will come to a large information sign and a right directional sign to Pine Cobble. Be mindful of loose, jagged rocks in the trail, especially in the fall when they're covered with leaves. A cobble is a rounded rock outcropping, which youall find plenty of when you get to the summit. The total elevation gain is 1,110 feet. When you reach the summit, you can continue along the ridge another 0.5 miles to reach the Appalachian Trail. This is a very dog-friendly trail, but keep in mind that there is no water available for thirsty pups. Water bowls are strategically placed along the trail, but most of the time they are empty.
