There and Back
This moderate route begins at the Dome Trailhead just off the western edge of the Green Mountain National Forest and climbs gradually through a dense northern hardwood forest. The trail heads northeast, rising steadily along a narrow corridor shaded by maple, birch, and beech, with a thick understory of ferns. Broad Brook parallels much of this stretch, with occasional stream crossings and reliable (though untreated) water access. Expect sections of rocky and uneven footing, especially where the trail contours across slopes or dips into drainage gullies.
Near the high point of the route, the path meets the Appalachian Trail corridor close to County Road. The Seth Warner Shelter sits just beyond, tucked into the forest with a seasonal water source nearby. This shelter is a popular rest point for backpackers and makes a logical turnaround for day hikers. Return the way you came, retracing the route through the same quiet woods. Wildlife sightings are possible, especially in the early morning; deer, black bear, and songbirds are common in this part of the forest. This is a peaceful day hike or overnight option for hikers seeking a less-traveled section of the southern Green Mountains.
