This easy, family-friendly route begins from a small roadside parking area just south of Felts Mills along NY-3. The trail forms a short loop through mature mixed hardwood forest, with portions of the route skirting the Black River’s edge. From the trailhead, follow the well-worn path into the woods—bear right at the first junction to travel clockwise for more immediate river access. The trail remains flat throughout, with minimal elevation change and clear footing.
Along the way, hikers can expect quiet woodland walking, potential wildlife sightings, and glimpses of the Black River through the trees. In some areas, informal paths may lead closer to the water. Keep an eye out for remnants of the area’s industrial past—stone foundations from old mill operations are sometimes visible near the riverbanks. The trail eventually loops back through forest to return to the parking area. This route offers a peaceful, short outing ideal for dog walking, nature observation, or stretching your legs on the drive between Watertown and Carthage.
