From Parking Lot 2 at the Indian River Lakes Conservancy’s Grand Lake Reserve, this hiking-only route begins along the Butterfield Lake Landing Trail, following a gradual path through mixed hardwood forest and wetlands. After a short distance, the route reaches a junction with the Eagle Marsh Trail, where hikers can turn to complete a rugged loop section. The Eagle Marsh Trail includes steeper grades and more technical footing through dense woods and marsh edges, with several overlooks of Eagle Marsh and Butterfield Lake along the way.
The terrain supports a wide range of wildlife, including loons, warblers, bald eagles, and rare turtles like the Blanding’s and stinkpot. Insects like dragonflies and damselflies are common, and the flora includes orchids, ferns, and bog-adapted species. Once the Eagle Marsh loop is completed, return along the Butterfield Lake Landing Trail, retracing the route back to the parking area. Camping, fires, and motorized vehicles are prohibited, and 4WD may be necessary in winter to reach the trailhead. This route rewards hikers with a mix of peaceful lake views and rich ecological diversity.
