Loop
This easy to moderate hiking route begins and ends at the Nature Center parking area in Wellesley Island State Park, located in New York’s Thousand Islands region. Following a counter-clockwise direction, the route links several designated trails—Eel Bay, Narrows, South Bay, East, and North Field—to form a varied loop through coastal hardwood forest and shoreline ecosystems. From the trailhead, hikers head north toward Eel Bay before curving east along the Narrows Trail. Around a short distance in, turn right at a marked junction to continue south past the quiet shoreline of South Bay. The trail then winds east through boardwalks and forest, with opportunities for birdwatching and interpretive signs along the way.
After traversing wetland habitats and passing by a beaver pond, the route turns north on the East Trail, climbing gently toward an overlook with views of the St. Lawrence River. It finishes across open terrain on the North Field Trail before closing the loop near the Nature Center. Expect a mix of firm dirt tread, occasional roots, and wooden boardwalks—some of which may be slippery when wet. This area is open year-round, but spring and late fall often bring wet conditions and standing water. Summer hikers should plan for ticks, mosquitoes, and poison ivy. While no permits are required, bring your own drinking water, as none is available on trail. This scenic route offers excellent wildlife viewing and a close-up look at the island’s diverse ecosystems.
