Loop
This hiking route begins at the Ball Road parking area off Knapp/Curtis Road and follows a well-used forest loop through Pinckney State Forest. From the trailhead, the route heads south into mixed hardwoods and gently rolling terrain. Several old woods roads and narrow singletrack segments combine to form the loop, which connects with wider forest tracks around the midpoint. The route includes occasional junctions—stay on the most prominent trail when in doubt or use GPS to confirm turns.
Although this forest has only two short DEC-designated trails, a larger informal system exists and is frequently used by local hikers and mountain bikers. Expect a mix of conditions, from smooth tread to muddy or root-filled stretches, especially in low-lying areas. The forest sits on the Tug Hill Plateau, and while elevation changes are generally mild, the terrain can feel more remote than expected. This route does not pass reliable water sources, and trail signage is limited, so come prepared for a more self-reliant experience.
The hike returns to Ball Road using the same trail system to close the loop. With moderate effort, this quiet route offers a peaceful woodland experience and is a good option for day hikes in Tug Hill’s backcountry.
