This moderate backcountry route begins at a small trailhead off Bone Run Run Road and forms a quiet circuit through the mixed hardwood and conifer forest of South Valley State Forest. From the start, the path follows old logging roads and narrow foot trails, climbing gradually before dipping into low hollows where seasonal creeks may cross the trail. Stay left at early forks to complete the loop clockwise, winding through wooded ridgelines, fern-covered clearings, and soft drainage cuts. Trail conditions can vary from dry and firm to slick and muddy depending on recent rainfall.
The forest’s remote feel and minimal signage make GPS navigation helpful, especially at vague intersections. Wildlife is common—expect sightings of deer, turkey, and songbirds, particularly in the early morning. During fall, dense foliage and overlapping hunting seasons require blaze orange and attention to surroundings. Primitive camping is allowed throughout the forest, though water is scarce outside wet seasons. This quiet route offers hikers a peaceful escape and a chance to explore one of western New York’s lesser-traveled state forests.
