The Mount Tuscarora / Firetower route begins near Quaker Lake in the southern section of Allegany State Park. From the trailhead, follow forested singletrack as it climbs steadily through mixed hardwoods toward the ridgeline. At the first junction, stay right to begin the counter clockwise loop. The grade steepens considerably as the route gains elevation toward Mount Tuscarora, offering intermittent views through the trees. About halfway into the route, you'll reach the historic Mount Tuscarora Fire Tower. While the tower is currently closed to climbing, it remains an iconic landmark and offers wide views from the surrounding clearing.
Beyond the tower, the trail descends gradually through remote, less-traveled terrain. Watch for faded blazes and occasional seasonal stream crossings. Wildlife is common in this backcountry zone—wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and black bear are often spotted. Continue following the main trail as it winds through dense forest and rejoins the original junction. Return to the trailhead the way you came. Fall colors and clear days offer the best conditions for this rugged hike through one of Western New York’s wilder corners.
