The Three Sisters Trail begins at its designated trailhead and quickly climbs into dense hardwood forest. The route ascends steeply in its early section before gaining the first of three parallel ridges, known collectively as the “sisters.” From this vantage point, hikers can enjoy panoramic views across Allegany State Park and the surrounding Allegheny Plateau. The trail continues along the ridgeline, undulating across rugged ground before dropping briefly into a forested saddle.
The second and third ridges rise in succession, each offering slightly different perspectives of the park’s rolling hills. The route remains rocky and uneven in places, demanding steady footing, especially after rain or during icy conditions. Wildlife sightings are common along the ridges, with hawks soaring overhead and signs of fox activity in the understory. After completing the final ridge, the trail descends gradually through oak and maple forest before looping back toward the trailhead. The payoff comes in the form of wide-ranging views and the satisfaction of traversing all three high points in one continuous hike.
