There and Back
Millville Peak is a really pretty hike with a few different options. You can hike the whole way from the base of Millville Canyon. Or you can ride or drive off-road the majority of the way which would make it an easy ridge climb. If you hike only the ridge it is 1.1 miles round trip with 500 feet of gain vs. hiking the whole canyon which is 15 miles round trip with 4448 feet of gain. This particular time I did the hike. Millville Peak is one of the highest peaks on the southern end of the Bear River Mountains at 9282 feet. Millville Canyon is a beautiful hike that is definitely long but is not too steep until the final push to the peak where it climbs at a decent clip. The canyon is beautiful but the peak looks very barren from the south side which you approach from. I promise once on top it is beautiful and very forested. The canyon mouth has a very large parking area located just above Millville. Once you have climbed the main canyon your first view of the peak will be available. Just to the right of the peak you can see a small rock outcrop. This is where you can park if you drive up or where you will leave the 4x4 road if you are hiking. There are no signs so it is kind of just park where you want. Just don't block the road. Start hiking towards the rock outcrop mentioned earlier. There are some really pretty trees in this part of the hike with good panoramic views. There is no official trail to the peak so just choose the easiest route for you up the ridge line. It doesn't look overly steep in photos but it definitely is on the final approach. Once on top the views are amazing. You can see parts of four states on a clear day. The best view from the top is the south side of nearby Mount Logan. Other peaks visible from the top are the entire Wellsville Range, Willard Peak, Ben Lomond, and the high peaks of the Uintahs. You can either return back down Millville Canyon as I did or you can also hike down Providence Canyon if you want to set up a shuttle. The providence route is much steeper but a little shorter.
