There and Back
The Highline trail is a relatively new trail that is located right in the mouth of Logan Canyon. It's also an easy, leisurely trail that is great for families. Due to its south facing slopes this trail opens up far earlier than others in the area making this a great early spring hike. This trail is a great intro into hiking Logan Canyon. There are many great examples of the classic limestone the canyon is famous for. The trail is somewhat ironically named since it really isn't high at all in elevation. The trailhead is located at the first dam park in the mouth of Logan Canyon. This is also the Shoreline trailhead. You walk through the tunnel to start the trail and will quickly come to the trail junction. Make sure you take the Highline Trail. There is also a nice list of rules for the trail. Please obey them. Some key ones to keep in mind are dogs must be leashed, you must clean up after your dogs, and no bikes are allowed on the trail. All of the elevation gain is climbed right at the first. It's not difficult; from the top it's all more or less flat. You get nice views of the first dam below you. The trail follows right along the rim of some small cliffs. Safety fences are in some spots but not all, so be sure to keep an eye on kids. You will pass some old ruins from the city water system. The higher you get you will get to see some classic limestone in Logan Canyon. The trail also becomes more forested the further you go. Keep an eye where you walk -- watch out for snakes and other critters. Eventually you will reach the end of the trail as it meets the highway. From here you will return the way you came. You don't have to hike the whole 1.66 miles to the end, and can turn around at any point.
