Description
This moderate route begins and ends at the Rushville Road parking area, following a rugged circuit through the High Tor Wildlife Management Area. Start by heading south on the orange-blazed Bristol Hills Trail, climbing gradually into dense hardwood forest. At an unmarked junction, continue southeast along a narrower footpath that leads toward the High Tor escarpment. A short distance ahead, the trail opens to an elevated ridge with sweeping views across the Canandaigua Lake valley. From here, continue through rolling terrain marked by glacial erratics, stone walls, and seasonal wetlands. Eventually, the route curves west and connects to a blue-blazed DEC access trail. Follow this back toward the starting point, navigating a mix of overgrown woods roads and faint singletrack. While terrain varies from soft forest floor to rocky descents, no scrambling is required. Seasonal streams appear along the way but are often dry—bring sufficient water. This area is popular with hunters in fall; wear bright colors during that time. The final stretch descends gently through quiet woods to close the loop at the parking area. The combination of solitude, wildlife habitat, and expansive lake valley views makes this one of the best day hikes in the Finger Lakes region.
