This moderate route begins in Douglas State Forest at the trailhead and parking area on the north shore of Wallum Lake. Hikers should follow the Coffeehouse Trail a short distance west before making a left onto the Mid-State Trail. When the Mid-State Trail takes a hard left, continue straight onto the Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT). Take another left onto the short but rugged Tri-State Marker Trail leading to the monument marking the intersection of three state lines. This final approach includes rocky terrain and some brief scrambling. Hikers can either retrace their steps from here or continue east on the Tri-State Marker Trail to connect back to the Mid-State Trail.
Though forested and shaded, the trail lacks reliable water sources, so hikers should come prepared. The route is open year-round, but winter visitors should use caution, especially on icy or uneven sections. Dogs are allowed if leashed. From the granite marker — first placed in the late 1800s — visitors can stand in all three states at once, a unique reward after a peaceful woodland walk.
