There and Back
The Switchback Trail begins near the visitor center at Makoshika State Park and forms a moderate point-to-point route through Montana’s largest state park. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked path as it climbs gradually along a series of switchbacks, gaining elevation through classic badlands terrain. The trail winds through eroded sandstone ridges and dry washes, offering sweeping views of the Yellowstone River breaks from higher points along the route.
Expect uneven footing and limited shade throughout, with steep drop-offs near several ridge edges. Keep right at minor junctions to stay on the main trail. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer and prairie birds, and the area is known for exposed rock layers rich in dinosaur fossils. There are no reliable water sources along the route, so carry all water needed. The elevated ridges and colorful geologic formations make this one of the most scenic hiking routes in Makoshika State Park.
