Starting from the main trailhead near the park visitor center, the Bluebird Trail forms a well-marked route through the rugged badlands of eastern Montana. Hikers follow a gentle path that gradually climbs over undulating terrain marked by eroded rock, sparse juniper, and fossil-studded hillsides. At the first junction, stay right to follow the loop counterclockwise through the most prominent hoodoo formations. The trail winds through open prairie benches and narrow gullies, offering several panoramic views across the broken landscape.
There are no reliable water sources along this route, and summer temperatures can climb quickly—carry all necessary supplies and be alert for rattlesnakes. Although the trail is open year-round, spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions. This is one of the best day hikes in Montana for exploring badlands geology without technical terrain.
