There and Back
The Artist Vista Trail begins at the Vista Trailhead near the visitor center in Makoshika State Park. Follow the Vista Trail for a short distance before turning onto the signed junction for the Artist Vista Trail. The route climbs gradually through sculpted badlands to a high point along a broad ridgeline, offering panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. From this elevated loop, the trail descends back the way it came, rejoining the Vista Trail for a short return to the trailhead.
This Class 1 route is ideal for novice hikers or families looking for a short, scenic walk through Montana’s largest badlands park. Interpretive signs highlight the area’s fossil-rich geology and layered rock formations. There is no water available along the trail—bring everything you need. Rattlesnakes are common during warmer months, and dogs must be leashed. This is one of the best easy day hikes in Makoshika State Park for views and geologic interest.
