There and Back
The Diane Gabriel Trail begins at the parking area near the visitor center at the end of Makoshika Park Road, just outside Glendive, Montana. This well-marked route makes a moderate climb through classic badlands terrain, winding past layers of exposed rock, narrow gullies, and weathered hoodoos. At a signed Y-intersection shortly after the start, stay right. The route ascends gradually along clay ridgelines, offering panoramic views of the surrounding park. Several interpretive signs along the way highlight Makoshika’s rich paleontological history, including the discovery of Triceratops fossils in the area.
The trail continues over uneven terrain before looping back to the junction, completing the route near the starting point. There are no water sources on the trail—refill at the visitor center before departing. Expect slick, unstable footing when the clay is wet, especially after rain. This is one of the best short hikes in Makoshika State Park for seeing badlands geology up close while learning about Montana’s dinosaur-rich past.
