Description
The Buccaneer Trail begins at the group picnic area near the park’s amphitheater and forms a moderate route through the sculpted badlands of Makoshika State Park. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked path into classic Eastern Montana terrain—wide open spaces filled with sagebrush, juniper, and colorful geologic formations. Several junctions offer optional detours, but staying on the main trail provides steady access to the area’s best fossil beds and interpretive geology signs. There are no reliable water sources, so carry plenty of water, especially in the summer heat. The trail loops back to the picnic area, making for a rewarding half-day hike packed with views and classic Montana badlands scenery.
